In Memoriam: Diana Northrup Lockard, 1925-2020

Diana Lockard, the inaugural dean of students at Pitzer College in Claremont, California, died on March 22. She was 95 years old and had suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.

A native of Montclair, New Jersey, Dr. Lockard was a graduate of Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. After serving as economic and community development director for the nonprofit organization CARE, she earned a master’s degree at Columbia University in New York City, and a Ph.D. in higher education from Claremont Graduate University in California.

In addition to her role as dean of students at Pitzer College, Dr. Lockard served the Claremont Colleges as assistant to the provost and director of admissions for Claremont Graduate University.  She later served for 18 years on the Citrus Community College District Board of Trustees, based in Glendora, California.

Dr. Lockard was also was a member of the California Community College Trustee Board and served a term as president. She was also executive director of California Concerns, an organization that promoted leadership for women in California higher education.
