Baylor University’s Trena Wilkerson is the New Leader of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics

Trena L. Wilkerson, a professor of mathematics education in the School of Education at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, has taken on a national leadership role as the newly installed president of the Board of Directors of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Professor Wilkerson was elected to the presidency for a two-year term by the full membership of NCTM, after first serving on the organization’s Board of Directors. Dr. Wilkerson joined NCTM during her first year as a classroom teacher of mathematics at Mandeville High School in Mandeville, Louisiana.

The council, which has more than 30,000 members, is headquartered in Reston, Virginia, and publishes books for educators, as well as journals, including the Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, Mathematics Teacher: Learning and Teaching PK-12 and Mathematics Teacher Educator.

Professor Wilkerson has taught in the department of curriculum and instruction at Baylor University since 1999. Earlier, she taught at Louisiana State University. Professor Wilkerson is a graduate of Mississippi College, where she majored in mathematics. She holds a master’s degree in mathematics education from Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond and a Ph.D. in mathematics curriculum and instruction from Southern Mississippi University in Hattiesburg.
