National Academy of Science Honors Kathleen Hall Jamieson With the 2020 Public Welfare Medal

Kathleen Hall Jamieson, director of the Annenberg Public Policy Center at the University of Pennsylvania and a professor of communication at the Annenberg School for Communication, will be awarded the 2020 Public Welfare Medal from the National Academy of Sciences at its annual meeting in April.

The Public Welfare Medal, established in 1914, is the Academy’s most prestigious award and is presented annually “to honor extraordinary use of science for the public good.”

The National Academy of Sciences announced that it is honoring Jamieson, a scholar of political and science communication, for her “nonpartisan crusade to ensure the integrity of facts in public discourse and development of the science of scientific communication to promote public understanding of complex issues.”

Professor Jamieson has taught at the University of Pennsylvania since 1989. Earlier, she taught at the University of Texas and the University of Maryland. She has authored or co-authored 16 books, most recently Cyberwar: How Russian Hackers and Trolls Helped Elect a President (Oxford University Press, 2018), which won the 2019 R.R. Hawkins Award from the Association of American Publishers.

Dr. Jamieson is graduate of Marquette University in Milwaukee. She earned a master’s degree nd a Ph.D. in communication from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
