Five Women Scholars Who Have Been Appointed to University Dean Positions

Kristen Broady is the new dean of the College of Business at Dillard University in New Orleans. She is a former lecturer in economics at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Earlier in her career, Dr. Broady was dean of the division of business and computer science at Atlanta Metropolitan State College.

Dr. Broady is a graduate of Alcorn State University in Mississippi, where she majored in criminal justice. She holds an MBA and a Ph.D. in business and economics from Jackson State University in Mississippi.

Elaine Morrato has been appointed founding dean of the Parkinson School of Health Sciences and Public Health at Loyola University Chicago, effective February 1, 2020. She has been serving as associate dean for public health practice and as a tenured professor of health systems, management, and policy at the Colorado School of Public Health on the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus.

Dr. Morrato is a graduate of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, where she majored in biology and biochemistry. She holds a master of public health degree and a doctorate in public health from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.

Paulette Tandy has been named interim dean for Lee Business School at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, effective January 1. She will become the first woman in the school’s history to serve in the dean role. Dr. Tandy, who joined the university’s faculty in 1989, has been serving as associate dean and associate professor of business and accounting at the business school.

Dr. Tandy is a graduate of Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, where she majored in business administration. She earned an MBA in finance and a Ph.D. in accounting at Texas A&M University.

Alyncia Bowen was appointed dean of doctoral studies and the School of Nursing at Franklin University in Columbus, Ohio. She is the first African American woman to serve as dean at the university. Dr. Bowen has taught at Franklin University for 14 years.

Dr. Bowen is a graduate of Capital University in Columbus, Ohio, where she majored in sociology. She holds a master’s degree in health services administration from Central Michigan University and a Ph.D. in organization and management from Capella University.

Lori Steiner, associate professor of mathematics and director of institutional research at Newman University in Wichita, Kansas, was named dean of the university’s School of Arts and Sciences, effective January 1. Dr. Steiner came to Newman University as an adjunct professor in 1999. She became a permanent member of the faculty in 2001 as a mathematics instructor and was promoted to assistant professor in 2004 and to associate professor in 2008.

Dr. Steiner earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Wichita State University in 1981, a master’s degree in mathematics from the University of Kansas in 1983 and a Ph.D. in adult education from Kansas State University in 2007.
