Department of Education Study Shows Gender Differences in Crime Victimization at Schools

A new report from the U.S. Department of Education looks at the number of students who were victims of crimes while at school. During the 2016-17 school year, 2.2 percent of all students ages 12 to 18 were victimized by crime.

There was a slight gender difference. Only 1.8 percent of girls in this age group with victimized by crime compared to 2.6 percent of boys. Only 0.5 percent of girls were victims of violent crime, compared to 1 percent of boys.

Some 1.3 percent of girls in the 12-to-18 age group reported that they had been victims of theft. For boys, the rate was 1.6 percent.
