A Quartet of Women Scholars Who Have Been Selected to Receive Prestigious Awards

Hale Ann Tufan, an adjunct professor in the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, has been selected to receive the 2019 Norman E. Borlaug Award for Field Research and Application from the World Food Prize. Tufan is being honored for her work championing gender-supportive activities within the global agricultural research community.

Dr. Tufan earned a Ph.D. on wheat molecular defense responses to fungal pathogens at the John Innes Centre in the United Kingdom.

New Mexico State University horn professor Nancy Joy recently received the International Horn Society Service Medal of Honor. She was honored at the organization’s recent symposium in Ghent, Belgium.

Joy is a graduate of Wittenburg Univerity in Springfield, Ohio, where she majored in music education. She holds a master’s degree in horn performance from New Mexico State University.

Lora Walsh, assistant professor of English at the University of Arkansas, has won the 2019 A.R. Pete Diamond Award from the Society of Biblical Literature. The award “supports junior scholars demonstrating innovative approaches in biblical studies that advance methodological work at the intersection of historical criticism, critical theory, and cultural studies.”

Dr. Walsh received a Ph.D. in religious studies with a concentration in medieval Christianity from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.

Carol A. Fierke, professor of chemistry, biochemistry, and biophysics and provost at Texas A&M University, has received the 2020 Mildred Cohn Award in Biological Chemistry from the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. The award, which carries a $5,000 cash prize and an invitation to deliver the Mildred Cohn Award Lecture at society’s annual convention next spring, honors scientists who have made substantial advances to the understating of biological chemistry using innovative physical approaches.

Dr. Fierke is a graduate of Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, where she majored in chemistry. She holds a Ph.D. in biochemistry from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts.
