Five Women Appointed to Named Professorships at Major Universities

Diane K. Denis was appointed to the Terrence Laughlin Chair in Finance at the Katz Graduate School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Denis is a professor of business administration, who joined the faculty at the university in 2011. Earlier, she taught for 16 years at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, and for six years at Virginia Tech.

Professor Denis received a bachelor’s degree in finance from Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. She holds  an MBA from the Cranfield Institute of Technology in the United Kingdom and a Ph.D. in finance from the University of Michigan.

Catriona MacLeod has been named the Frank Curtis Springer and Gertrude Melcher Springer Professor in the department of Germanic studies at the University of Chicago. She is the author of Fugitive Objects: Literature and Sculpture in the German Nineteenth Century (Northwestern University Press, 2014).

Professor MacLeod holds a master’s degree from the University of Glasgow in Scotland and a Ph.D. from Harvard University.

Suzanne Berger has been named the inaugural John M. Deutch Institute Professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She joined the faculty at MIT in 1968. Her research has focused on European politics and society and America’s innovation economy.

Professor Berger received her undergraduate degree from the University of Chicago and her Ph.D. from Harvard University.

Hanna Pickard was appointed the Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of Philosophy and Bioethics at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Dr. Pickard comes to Johns Hopkins from the University of Birmingham in England, where she is chair in philosophy of psychology. For the past two academic years, she has served as a visiting research scholar in cognitive science at Princeton University.

Professor Pickard holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Queen’s University in Canada and a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Oxford in England.

Carolyn Kitch professor of journalism at Temple University in Philadelphia has been appointed a Laura H. Carnell Professor. She is the is associate editor of Journalism &  Mass Communication Quarterly. Professor Kitch is the author of several books including Pennsylvania in Public Memory: Reclaiming the Industrial Past (Pennsylvania State University Press, 2012).

Dr. Kitch is a graduate of Boston University, where she majored in journalism. She holds a master’s degree in American studies from the University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. in mass media and communication from Temple University.
