Five Women Scholars in Higher Education Who Are Taking on New Assignments

Irasema Coronado has been named director of the School of Transborder Studies at Arizona State University. She was an endowed professor in the department of political science at the University of Texas El Paso.

Dr. Coronado is a graduate of the University of South Florida where she majored in political science. She holds a master’s degree in Latin American studies and a Ph.D. in political science both from the University of Arizona.

Amanda Gosman has been named chief of the division of plastic surgery at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. She is a professor of plastic surgery and also directs the medical school’s plastic surgery residency and craniofacial fellowship programs.

Dr. Gosman holds a medical doctorate from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.

Paula Fass has been named faculty director at The Magnes Collection of Jewish Life and Art at the University of California, Berkeley. She is the Margaret Byrne Professor of History Emerita. She returns to the university after retiring in 2010.

Dr. Fass is a magna cum laude graduate of Barnard College in New York City, where she majored in history. She holds a master’s degree and Ph.D. both in American history from Columbia University.

Saara DeWalt has been named chair of the department of biological sciences in the College of Science at Clemson University in South Carolina. She is a professor of biological sciences and has served as interim chair since October 2018.

Dr. DeWalt is a graduate of Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, where she majored in biology. She holds a Ph.D. in biological sciences with a minor in experimental statistics from Louisiana State University.

Karen Whitehill King has been named president of the American Academy of Advertising. She is a Jim Kennedy New Media Professor and professor of advertising in the Grady College at the University of Georgia.

Dr. King holds three degrees from the University of Illinois: a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree both in advertising, and a Ph.D. in communications.
