In Memoriam: Suzanne Doviak, 1949-2019

Suzanne “Sue” Doviak, professor emerita in the department of mathematics and statistics at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia, passed away on February 5. She was 69 years old.

Professor Doviak began her 37-year career at Old Dominion University in 1980 as an instructor in the department of economics. In 1988, she moved to the department of mathematics and statistics, where she worked with several campus groups to provide remedial math instruction. She was a pioneer in distance learning, which led to her creation of an online version of a mathematics course that she taught for many years. She also was a coordinator for LADDERS, a program aimed at helping students on probation. She retired as professor emerita in 2017.

In addition to teaching, Professor Doviak was an active community volunteer. She dedicated time to the Harborfest Committees, the ODU Women’s Caucus, Friends of the Norfolk Public Library, Friends of the ODU Library, Norfolk Academy and the Chrysler Museum of Art.

Professor Doviak held a bachelor’s degree from the University at Buffalo of the State University of New York and a master’s degree from Old Dominion University.
