In Memoriam: Doris Grove Skillman Stockton, 1924-2018

Doris Stockton, professor emerita of mathematics at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, passed away on December 13, 2018. She was 94 years old.

Dr. Stockton was inspired to study the sciences by the call for women to enter the workforce during World War II. She became only the second woman to earn a doctoral degree from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

After she finished her education, Dr. Stockton taught briefly at the University of Connecticut. From there, she began a 52-year career at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst as an instructor in the department of mathematics in 1954. She retired as a professor of mathematics in 2006.

Dr. Stockton held a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Douglas College of Rutgers University, and a master’s degree and Ph.D. in mathematics from Brown University.
