In Memoriam: Susan Ervin-Tripp, 1927-2018

Susan Ervin-Tripp, professor emerita of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, died last month in Oakland, California, from complications of an infection. She was 91 years old.

Professor Ervin-Tripp was known for her research on language development in children, Native Americans, and immigrants. She was also a strong advocate for gender equality in higher education.

Dr. Ervin-Tripp was a native of Minneapolis. She graduated from Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, New York, in 1949 with a bachelor’s degree in art history. After earning a Ph.D. at the University of Michigan, Dr. Ervin-Tripp taught for three years at the Graduate School of Education at Harvard University. She joined the full-time faculty in the speech department faculty at the University of California, Berkeley in 1959. She switched to the department of psychology in 1975 and remained on the university’s faculty until 1999.
