In Memoriam: Jenessa R. Shapiro, 1980-2018

Jenessa R. Shapiro, an associate professor with appointments in the department of psychology and the Anderson School of Management at the University of California, Los Angeles, died on December 6. She was 38 years old and had suffered from cancer.
Dr. Shapiro was an expert in stereotype threat and prejudice in intergroup relations and a strong advocate for increasing educational and career opportunities for women in STEM fields. She joined the faculty at UCLA in 2008. Earlier this year, Dr. Anderson was named to an endowed position; the UCLA Anderson Term Chair in Management.
Al Osborne, interim dean of the School of Management at UCLA, stated that “Jenessa was an outstanding and impactful scholar, award-winning teacher, and mentor. But while her work was outstanding, she is remembered for her commitment to diversity, for using her work to benefit others and for extraordinary strength, toughness and character.”
Dr. Shapiro was a graduate of Rice University in Houston. She earned a Ph.D. in social psychology at Arizona State University.
