In Memoriam: Deborah Welles Hardy, 1928-2018

Deborah Welles Hardy, retired tenured professor in the department of history at the University of Wyoming, passed away on October 23, 2018. She was 90 years old.

In 1968, Dr. Hardy joined the faculty in the department of history at the University of Wyoming, where she later went on to serve as head of the department. During her career, she received an Outstanding Former Faculty award and became a lifetime member of Phi Beta Kappa.

In addition to her career at the University of Wyoming, Dr. Hardy served as an official exchange scholar to the Soviet Union, as president of the Rocky Mountain Slavic Association, and as president of the Western Social Science Association. She was also a member of the Wyoming Council for the Humanities and was an advocate for women’s education in Wyoming.

Dr. Hardy held a bachelor’s degree in modern history from Stanford University, a master’s degree in modern history from the University of California, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in Russian history from the University of Washington.
