Two University of Georgia Scholars Honored for Developing a Social Work Education Course

Two women from the University of Georgia, Jennifer Elkins, an associate professor in the School of Social Work, and Emma Hetherington, an assistant clinical professor in the School of Law have been awarded the 2018 SAGE/CSWE Award or Innovative Teaching in Social Work Education. They are honored for developing a model for teaching trauma-informed courtroom practices to social work and law students.

The course they designed was created to explain how to more effectively advocate for and represent child welfare-involved people within the court system. It is the first course of its kinds at Georgia.

Dr. Elkins holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology and social work and a master of social work degree from the University of Wisconsin and a Ph.D. in social work from Colombia University in New York City.

Professor Hetherington holds a bachelor’s degree from Emory University in Atlanta and a juris doctorate from the University of Georgia.
