Mary Romero Takes Over as President of the American Sociological Association

Mary RomeroMary Romero, a professor in the School of Social Transformation at Arizona State University, assumed the role of president of the American Sociological Association at their recent annual meeting in Philadelphia. The nonprofit organization was founded to advance sociology as a scientific discipline and profession serving the public good.

Dr. Romero plans to build on the association’s existing programs to appeal to a wider range of potential members. She stated: “As we move further into the unsettling Trump administration, the American Sociological Association must be prepared to effectively challenge attacks on tenure and academic freedom in higher education.” The new ASA president calls on her field to draw from the activist roots of their discipline and fight against discrimination and social injustice.

Professor Romero joined the faculty at Arizona State University in 1995. Previously, she taught at the University of Oregon, San Francisco State University, and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside. She is the author or editor of several books including The Maid’s Daughter: Living Inside and Outside the American Dream (New York University Press, 2011),

Dr. Romero holds a bachelor’s degree from Regis College in Weston, Massachusetts, where she majored in sociology and minored in Spanish. She also holds a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Colorado.
