Four Women Faculty Members in New Roles at Major Research Universities

Margaret Himley, the associate provost for international education and engagement at Syracuse University, was named director of LGBT Studies at Syracuse University in New York. She had been serving as associate provost for international education and engagement, but will now return to the faculty on a full-time basis.

Dr. Himley also holds the title of Laura J. and L. Douglas Meredith Professor of Teaching Excellence at the university. She is a graduate of the University of Illinois and holds a Ph.D. in composition and rhetoric from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

Irene Vasquez, professor of Chicana and Chicano studies and American studies at the University of New Mexico, is the new director of the Southwest Hispanic Research Institute at the university. She is the co-author of Making Aztlan: Ideology and Culture of the Chicana and Chicano Movement 1966-1977 (University of New Mexico Press, 2014).

Dr. Vasquez holds bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in history, all from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Katherine Bunting-Howarth was named interim director of the New York Sea Grant program at Stony Brook University. She has been associate director of New York Sea Grant since 2011. She also serves as the assistant director of Cooperative Extension at Cornell University.

Dr. Bunting-Howarth holds a law degree  from the University of Oregon and a Ph.D. in marine studies from the University of Delaware.

Lynne Parker, professor of electrical engineering and computer science and interim dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Tennessee is taking a leave from her faculty post to serve as assistant director for artificial intelligence for the White House Office of Science and Technology.

Professor Parker is a graduate of Tennessee Technological University. She holds a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Tennessee and a Ph.D. in computer science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
