Syracuse University Adds Three Women to Posts in the Division of Marketing and Communications

Sarah Scalese was promoted to senior associate president for communication. Since October 2015, she has served as associate vice president for university communications. She joined the staff at the university in 2014 as director of communications for the College of Arts and Sciences. Scalese holds a bachelor’s degree in communications from Jacksonville University in Florida.

Ellen de Graffenreid was hired as the senior associate vice president for content strategy. She has been serving as director of the Center for Health Policy at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Earlier, she was vice chancellor for marketing and communication at the University of Missouri and senior vice president for communications at Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts. De Graffenreid is a graduate of Indiana University, where she majored in history. She holds an MBA and a master’s degree in Russian history from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Tonya Strong-Charles was appointed executive director for media relations. She has been serving as executive director of media relations at John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio. Earlier, she was an Emmy Award-winning journalist for a television station in Cleveland. Strong-Charles holds a bachelor’s degree in telecommunications from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. She is currently studying for a master’s degree in nonprofit administration at John Carroll University.
