Simmons College Is Transitioning to Simmons University

Simmons College in Boston was founded in 1899. It enrolls about 1,800 women in its undergraduate college and more than 4,300 students in its co-educational graduate programs.

With its emphasis on graduate education, Simmons College will become Simmons University on September 1. In the new structure, Simmons University will continue to offer an undergraduate program for women and numerous graduate programs open to all.

Simmons University will consist of the Gwen Ifill College of Media, Arts, and Humanities; the College of Social Sciences, Policy, and Practice; the College of Organizational, Computational, and Information Sciences; and the College of Natural, Behavioral, and Health Sciences. Several of Simmons’ well-known professional schools—including the School of Nursing, the School of Social Work, the School of Library and Information Science, and the School of Business—will retain their identities and live within the colleges alongside other existing departments and programs.

Helen G. Drinan president of Simmons College stated that “given the size and scope of our programs, including online graduate programs with national and international reach, ‘university’ is a more accurate description of who we are and where we are going. We’re looking forward to a very exciting future.”
