Five Women Professors Retire From the Yale University Faculty

The faculty of Arts and Sciences at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, has announced the retirement of five women faculty members.

Janice Carlisle is a professor of English. She is the author of Common Scents: Comparative Encounters in High-Victorian Fiction (Oxford University Press, 2004) and Picturing Reform in Victorian Britain (Cambridge University Press, 2012). Professor Carlisle joined the faculty at Yale in 2004. She is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, and earned a Ph.D. at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

Annping Chin has been serving as a senior lecturer in history at Yale. She joined the faculty at the university in 1995. Dr. Chin is the author of Four Sisters of Hofei (Scribner, 2002) and The Authentic Confucius: A Life of Thought and Politics (Scribner, 2007). Dr. Chin is a graduate of Michigan State University. She earned a Ph.D. at Columbia University in New York City.

Deborah Davis has been a member of the faculty at Yale since 1978 and was a professor of sociology at the time of her retirement and earlier had served as department chair. Professor Davis  is the author or editor of nine books. She is an expert on social transformation of China over the past half century. Dr. Davis is a graduate of Wellesley College and holds a Ph.D. from Boston University.

Roberta Frank is the Marie Borroff Professor of English and a professor of linguistics at Yale. Before joining the faculty at Yale in 2000, Professor Frank taught at the University of Toronto and Harvard University. She is the author of Old Norse Court Poetry: The Drottkvaett Stanza (Cornell University Press, 1978). Professor Frank is a graduate of New York University and hold a Ph.D. from Harvard University.

Susan Rose-Ackerman is the Henry R. Luce Professor of Law and professor of political science at Yale. She taught at Yale from 1974 to 1982 and then returned to Yale in 1987. She is the co-author of Corruption and Government: Causes, Consequences, and Reform (Cambridge University Press, 2nd Edition, 2016). This book has been translated into 17 languages. Professor Rose-Ackerman is a graduate of Wellesley College and holds a Ph.D. from Yale University.
