Grants or Gifts Relating to Women in Higher Education

Here is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.

Northeastern University in Boston, Massachusetts, received a grant from Pivotal Ventures, the executive offices of Melinda Gates, co-founder of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, to support the university’s Align program. Align provides scholarship funds for the first year of master’s degree studies in computer science for women and students from underrepresented groups.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has issues grants totaling $950,00 to 39 institutions of higher education in the state for programs designed to reduce sexual assaults on campus. Colleges and universities applied for the grants to fund programs such as campus-wide training for students, faculty and staff as well as campus-wide campaigns to raise awareness of sexual assault.

Temple University in Philadelphia received a $500,000 grant from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to continue funding the Temple/Wedge Center of Excellence. The program is designed to treat pregnant women who have been addicted to opioids. The Wedge Medical Center is a drug and alcohol rehabilitation facility with a primary focus on mental health and substance abuse treatment. Laura A. Hart, an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the Temple University School of Medicine is the Wedge Center’s medical director. Dr. Hart is a graduate of Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts, and the St. George’s University School of Medicine in Grenada.
