Women Continue to Hold a Large Lead in Higher Education Enrollments at All Levels

A new report from the U.S. Department of Education, offers new data on enrollments in higher education in the fall of 2016. The data shows there were 11,445,188 women students enrolled in Title IV institutions in the fall of 2016. They made up 56.6 percent of all students enrolled in higher education.

Women were 55.3 percent of all students at public colleges and universities and 57.9 percent of all students at private, nonprofit colleges and universities. In the fall of 2016, there 951,971 women students enrolled at private, for-profit educational institutions. They made up two thirds all students at for-profit educational institutions.

There were 6,001,235 women students at four-year undergraduate institutions. They made up 55.7 percent of all undergraduate students at four-year colleges and universities. There were 3,509,078 women students attending two-year colleges. They made up 56.5 percent of all students at two-year educational institutions.

In 2016, there were 1,750,575 women students enrolled in graduate school. They made up 58.9 percent of all students in graduate-level education.
