The University of Chicago Names Three Women to Endowed Professorships

The University of Chicago recently named a large group of scholars to endowed chairs. Three of these appointments went to women.

Bana Jabri was named the Sarah and Harold Lincoln Thompson Professor in the department of medicine. Dr. Jabri is a gastroenterologist and expert in human immunology. She serves as vice chair for research in the department of medicine and as director of research for the Celiac Disease Center at the university. Dr. Jabri hold a medical doctorate from the Institut Pasteur in Paris and a Ph.D. from the University of Paris.

Carole Ober was appointed the Blum-Riese Distinguished Service Professor in Human Genetics. She is chair of the department of human genetics at the university. Her research focuses on genetics of reproduction and asthma susceptibility. She has conducted studies on the Hutterites of South Dakota and the Amish of northern Indiana.

Sydney L. Hans was named the Frank P. Hixon Distinguished Service Professor in the School of Social Service Administration at the University of Chicago. She is deputy dean for research and director of the Family Support Training Program for the School of Social Service Administration. She previously held an academic appointment in the university’s department of psychiatry for 25 years. Professor Hans holds a bachelor’s degree in human development and family studies from Cornell University and a Ph.D. in psychology and social relations from Harvard University.
