Penn State Professor Emily Grosholz Honored for Her Work on the Philosophy of Science

Emily Grosholz, the Edwin Erle Sparks Professor of Philosophy, English, and African American Studies at Pennsylvania State University, has been selected as the recipient of the Fernando Gil International Prize in Philosophy of Science. The award is presented every two years by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology and the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. The award honors the author of the best work on the philosophy of science published within the past five years. Professor Grosholz will be honored at a ceremony in Lisbon on April 9.

Professor Grosholz was honored for her book Starry Reckoning: Reference and Analysis in Mathematics and Cosmology (Springer, 2016). An earlier book author by Professor Grosholz is Representation and Productive Ambiguity in Mathematics and the Sciences (Oxford University Press, 2007).

Dr. Grosholz has taught at Pennsylvania State University since 1979. She is affiliated with the Center for Fundamental Theory in the Institute for Gravitation and the Cosmos at the university.

Professor Grosholz is a graduate of the University of Chicago, where she majored in ideas and methods. She holds a Ph.D. in philosophy from Yale University.
