Four Universities Make Appointments of Women to Dean Positions

Vicky Wilkins was named dean of the School of Public Affairs at American University in Washington, D.C. She joined the faculty at the university in 2014 and serves as a professor of public administration and policy. Earlier, Dr. Wilkins was graduate coordinator and director of MPA programs at the University of Georgia. She served on the faculty there for 11 years.

Dr. Wilkins holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Missouri.

Constance Smith Hendricks was appointed dean of the School of Nursing and Allied Health at Tuskegee University in Alabama. Dr. Hendricks has been serving as the founding chair of the Division of Health Sciences at Concordia College in Selma, Alabama.

Dr. Hendricks holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing and a master’s degree in community health from the University of Alabama Birmingham. She was the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in clinical nursing research from Boston College.

Sabrina Madison-Cannon will be the next dean of the School of Music and Dance at the University of Oregon. She has been serving as a professor of dance and associate dean of academic and faculty affairs in the Conservatory of Music and Dance at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Earlier, she taught at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. She will begin her new role for the 2018-19 academic year.

Madison Cannon earned a master of fine arts degree from the University of Iowa. She has been a soloist for the Philadelphia Dance Company.

Judith Karshmer was named dean of the College of Nursing and Health innovation at Arizona State University. She will take office in June. Dr. Karshmer is a professor and former dean of the School of Nursing and Health Professions at the University of San Francisco.

Dr. Karshmer is a graduate of the University of Iowa, where she majored in nursing. She earned a master’s degree in advance psychiatric nursing at Rutgers University in New Jersey and a master’s degree in social psychology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She holds a Ph.D. in social psychology from New Mexico State University.
