Four Universities Announce the Appointments of Women to Dean Positions

Judith Kelley, the Terry Sanford Professor of Public Policy and professor of political science at Duke University, was named dean of the Sanford School of Public Policy at the university. She has been serving as senior associate dean since 2014 and has been on the university’s faculty since 2002. She will become dean on July 1.

A native of Denmark, Professor Kelley is a graduate of Stanford University. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in public policy from Harvard University. Her most recent book is Scorecard Diplomacy: Grading States to Influence Their Reputation and Behavior (Cambridge University Press, 2017).

Carey Busch was appointed acting dean of University College at Ohio University in Athens. She has been serving as assistant dean of student accessibility for University College. Dr. Busch joined the staff at the university in 2007 as assistant director of career services.

Dr. Busch holds a bachelor’s degree in forensic chemistry, a master’s degree in education and community counseling, and a Ph.D. in counselor education and supervision, all from Ohio University.

Gesine Gerhard will be the next dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. She will take office on July 1. Since 2012, Dr. Gerhard has served as associate dean of the College of the Pacific in Stockton, California. She joined the faculty there in 1999.

Professor Gerhard holds a master’s degree in history from the technical University of Berlin in Germany. She earned a Ph.D. in modern German history from the University of Iowa.

Riché Barnes, who has been serving as a professor of sociocultural anthropology and assistant dean of social sciences at Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts, was named dean of Pierson College at Yale University. She is the author of Raising the Race: Black  Career Women Redefine Marriage, Motherhood and Community (Rutgers University Press, 2016).

Dr. Barnes is a graduate of Spelman College in Atlanta, where she majored in political science. She holds a master’s degree in urban studies from Georgia State University and a second master’s degree and a Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from Emory University in Atlanta.
