Four Women Scholars Honored With Prestigious Awards

Donna K. Arnett, professor of epidemiology and dean of the College of Public Health at the University of Kentucky, received the 2017 Population Research Prize from the American Heart Association. The annual award honors important research on cardiovascular disease patterns in populations.

Dr. Arnett holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing and a master of public health degree from the University of South Florida. She earned a Ph.D. in epidemiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Caroline Haythornthwaite, a professor in the School of Information Studies at Syracuse University in New York, received the 2017 Research in Information Science Award from the Association for Information Science and Technology. Before joining the faculty at Syracuse in 2016, Dr. Haythornthwaite was the director of School of Library, Archival, and Information Studies at the University of British Columbia.

Professor Haythornthwaite is a graduate of Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario. She holds two master’s degrees and a Ph.D. in information science from the University of Toronto.

Kelly McQueen, professor of anesthesiology and surgery at the Vanderbilt University Medical Center, received the 2017 Nicholas M. Green M.D. Outstanding Humanitarian Contribution Award from the American Society of Anesthesiologists. The award honors individuals for their work in disaster relief or education in developing countries.

Dr. McQueen is a graduate of Colorado College and the University of Vermont College of Medicine. She also holds a master of public health degree from Harvard University.

Rachel Croson, professor of economics and dean of the College of Social Science at Michigan State University, received the Carolyn Shaw Bell Award from the Committee on the Status of Women in the Economics Profession of the American Economics Association. Before joining the Michigan State faculty last year, she was a professor of economics and dean of the College of Business at the University of Texas at Arlington.

Professor Croson is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where she double majored in economics and philosophy. She earned a Ph.D. in economics at Harvard University.
