Wendy Wintersteen to be the First Woman President of Iowa State University

The board of regents of the State of Iowa has named Wendy Wintersteen as the 16th president of Iowa State University in Ames. When she takes office on November 20, Dr. Wintersteen will be the first woman to lead Iowa State University in its nearly 160-year history.

Iowa State University enrolls more than 30,000 undergraduate students and more than 5,500 graduate students. Women make up 43 percent of the undergraduate student body.

Dr. Wintersteen first joined the faculty at Iowa State in 1979. In 1989, she left briefly to serve as director of the National Pesticide Education Program of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Since 2006, she has served as dean of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at Iowa State.

Dr. Wintersteen earned a bachelor’s degree in crop protection from Kansas State University and a Ph.D. in entomology from Iowa State University.
