Eight Women Scholars Taking on New Roles at American Colleges and Universities

Shirley Moore, the Edward J. and Louise Mellen Professor of Nursing and associate dean for research at the School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, can now add the title of Distinguished University Professor to her resume. Professor Moore joined the faculty at the university in 1992.

Dr. Moore holds master’s degrees in nursing and education and a Ph.D., all from Case Western Reserve University.

Micaela Baranello is a new assistant professor in the department of music at the University of Arkansas. She was conducting postdoctoral research at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts. Her research focuses on nineteenth- and twentieth-century opera.

Dr. Baranello is a graduate of Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in musicology from Princeton University.

Genevieve Shaker was promoted to associate professor of philanthropic studies and granted tenure in the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University in Indianapolis. She is teaching a new course on donor motivation.

Dr. Shaker is a graduate of Minnesota State University-Moorhead. She earned a master’s degree in philanthropy and a doctorate in higher education administration from Indiana University.

Saray Shai is a new assistant professor of computer science at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut. She was a conducting postdoctoral research at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dr. Shai is a graduate of the Israel Institute of Technology and holds a Ph.D. from the University of St. Andrews in Scotland.

Evelyn Wang, the Gail E. Kendall Professor in the School of Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, was named associate director of operations for the department of mechanical engineering. She also serves as the director of the university’s Device Research Laboratory.

Dr. Wang joined the faculty at MIT in 2007. She is a graduate of MIT and holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University.

Erika Busse-Cardenas was hired as an assistant professor of sociology at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota. She was an assistant professor at the University of the Pacific in Lima, Peru.

Dr. Busse-Cardenas is a graduate of Pontificia Universidad Catolica de Peru. She earned a master degree at the University of Sussex in England and a Ph.D. at the University of Minnesota.

Ann-Margaret Esnard, Distinguished University Professor at Georgia State University in Atlanta, was given the added duties as interim associate dean for research and strategic initiatives for the university’s School of Policy Studies. Esnard has been at Georgia State since 2013. She is co-editor of the recently released book, Coming Home After Disaster: Multiple Dimensions of Housing Recovery (CRC Press, 2016).

Professor Esnard is a graduate of the University of the West Indies. She holds a master’s degree in agronomy and soils from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayaguez and a Ph.D. in regional planning from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

Alicia Lee is a new assistant professor of clarinet at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is a former fellow of Ensemble Connect, a program sponsored by Carnegie Hall, The Julliard School and the Weill Music Institute.

Lee is a graduate of Columbia University in New York City, where she majored in French language and literature. She holds a master’s degree in clarinet performance from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
