A Quartet of Women Appointed to Dean Positions at Colleges and Universities

Laura N. Gitlin was named the next dean of the College of Nursing and Health Professions at Drexel University in Philadelphia. She will begin her new job on February 1. Dr. Gitlin is the Isabel Hampton Robb Distinguished Professor in the department of community public health at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. She has taught at Johns Hopkins since 2011.

Professor Gitlin is a graduate of Temple University in Philadelphia, where she majored in anthropology. She holds a Ph.D. in sociology from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Carol Fawcett was named dean of allied health and emergency services at Prairie State College in Chicago Heights, Illinois. She has been serving as director of the physical therapy assistant program at Fox College in Bedford Park, Illinois.

Dean Fawcett is a graduate of the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Illinois, where she majored in health arts. She holds a master’s degree in education from Capella University.

Shanan Gwaltney Gibson was appointed dean of the College of Business at Texas A&M University-Commerce. She was associate dean for student and faculty development at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina.

Dr. Gibson is a graduate of Armstrong Atlantic State University in Savannah, Georgia. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in industrial and organizational psychology from Virginia Tech.

Carole Chabries was named the inaugural dean of the School of Adult Learning and New Initiatives at Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. She was dean of graduate and continuing studies at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri.

Dr. Chabries is a graduate of the University of Washington. She earned a master’s degree and a doctorate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
