In Memoriam: Jeanette Collier Phillips, 1931-2017

Jeanette PhillipsJeanette Phillips, a former professor of home economics and nutrition at the University of Mississippi, died on June 13. She was 85 years old.

A native of Kewanee, Mississippi, Dr. Phillips was valedictorian of her high school class at Dixie Highway High School. She was a graduate of Blue Mountain College in Mississippi and earned a master’s degree in home economics at the University of Mississippi.

After teaching high school for several years, she joined the faculty in the home economics department at the University of Mississippi. She later chaired the department and earned a Ph.D. at the university.

Dr. Phillips was a driving force to bring the National Food Service Management Institute to the University of Mississippi. The street that passes directly in front of the institute’s headquarters is now known as Jeanette Phillips Drive.
