Sandra Faber to Be Awarded the $500,000 Gruber Cosmology Prize

Sandra FaberSandra Faber, professor emerita of astronomy and astrophysics at the University of California Santa Cruz, has been selected to receive the prestigious Gruber Cosmology Prize from the Gruber Foundation. The foundation is recognizing Professor Faber for a body of work that has helped establish many of the foundational principles underlying the modern understanding of the universe. The award, which will be presented this fall, comes with a $500,000 prize.

Dr. Faber joined the faculty at the University of California, Santa Cruz in 1972. She is the author of more than 250 scientific papers which have been cited more than 37,000 times. Dr. Faber’s research focuses on the formation and evolution of galaxies.

A graduate of Swarthmore College, where she majored in physics, Dr. Faber earned a Ph.D. in astronomy at Harvard University. In 2013, she was awarded the National Medal of Science.
