In Memoriam: Bettye B. Burkhalter, 1941-2017

Bettye BurkhalterBettye Burkhalter, a professor emerita of education at Auburn University, died on May 4 at the DCH Regional Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. She was 75 years old and had suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Dr. Burkhalter was a graduate of the University of Alabama and held five degrees, including two doctorates. She began her career in the Birmingham City School District. She joined the faculty at Auburn University in 1978 rising to become a graduate professor in the College of Education. While at Auburn, Dr. Burkhalter also served as special assistant to the vice president for research, director of the Auburn University Economic Development Institute, associate provost for assessment and quality improvement and academic affairs.

She retired from Auburn in 2000 and was awarded emerita status.
