Grants or Gifts Relating to Women in Higher Education

Florida International University in Miami received a $3 million grant from the National Science Foundation to fund a program to increase the number of young women who seek careers in physics. The program will enlist 16,000 high school physics teachers to each recruit and mentor one high school girl to pursue a physics major in college. Texas A&M University-Commerce, the American Physical Society, and the American Association of Physics Teachers will be a partners in the project

Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts received a five-year, $1.6 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to study gender differences in complicated neurological disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease.

Meredith College, the liberal arts educational institution for women in Raleigh, North Carolina, received a grant from the Council of Independent College to help fund the college’s Intergenerational Connections: Students Serving Older Adults program. Meredith College students will visit low-income, older adults in Raleigh area who live alone and administer home safety checks with the goal of reducing the possibility that the senior citizens will experience falls. They will also offer seniors simple exercises they can do at home to help them maintain their balance.
