Three Women Faculty Members Earn Promotions at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania

Swarthmore College, the highly rated liberal arts educational institution in suburban Philadelphia, has announced the promotion of five faculty members. Three of these promotions were granted to women.

Catherine Crouch was promoted to full professor of physics. Her research interests include protein-cell membrane interactions, nonparticle physics, and physics education. Professor Crouch joined the faculty at Swarthmore in 2003 and was granted tenure in 2009. Dr. Crouch is a summa cum laude graduate of Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in physics from Harvard University.

Jane Gillham was appointed a full professor of psychology at Swarthmore College. Her research is focused on how schools can promote well-being in children, adolescents, and young adults. She is a co-author of the book The Optimistic Child: How Learned Optimism Protects Children From Depression (Houghton Mifflin, 1995). Professor Gillham is a graduate of Princeton University in New Jersey. She holds a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Pennsylvania.

Christy Schuetze was promoted to associate professor of anthropology. Her research focuses on southern Africa and she has conducted extensive field work in central Mozambique. She has written a book manuscript entitled Spirit Wives and Church Mothers: Marriage, Social Healing, and Survival in Mozambique. Dr. Schuetze is a graduate of Colorado College. She holds a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania.
