Three Women Scholars Awarded Tenure at Middlebury College in Vermont

The board of trustees of Middlebury College in Vermont, recently awarded tenure to four faculty members. Three of the four faculty members awarded tenure are women.

Maggie Clinton is an associate professor of Chinese history. She is the author of Revolutionary Nativism: Fascism and Culture in China, 1925-1937 (Duke University Press, 2017). Dr. Clinton joined the faculty at Middlebury College in 2009. She is a graduate of Wesleyan University in Middletown, Connecticut and holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from New York University.

Shawna Shapiro is an associate professor of writing and linguistics. Dr Shapiro joined the faculty in 2009. She is the co-author of a forthcoming book entitled Educating Refugee-Background Students: Critical Issues and Dynamic Contexts. Dr. Shapiro is a graduate of the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, where she majored in secondary education. She holds a master’s degree in teaching English for speakers of other languages and a Ph.D. in English language and rhetoric from the University of Washington.

Louisa Stein in an associate professor of film and media studies. Before coming to Middlebury, Louisa headed the critical studies area of the television, film, and new media department at San Diego State University. She is the author of Millennial Fandom: Television Audiences in the Transmedia Age (University of Iowa Press, 2015). Dr. Stein earned a Ph.D. in cinema studies at New York University.
