Harvard Professor Michele Lamont Chosen to Win the 2017 Erasmus Prize

Michele Lamont, the Robert I. Goldman Professor of European Studies at Harvard University, has been named the winner of the 2017 Erasmus Prize from the Erasmus Foundation. The prize honors individuals who have made significant contributions to European culture, society, or social science. Dr. Lamont will receive a prize of 150,000 euros.

Dr. Lamont, who also serves as a professor of sociology and a professor of African and African American studies, is being honored for her contributions to social science research into the relationship between knowledge, power, and diversity. She recently was voted president of the American Sociological Association.

Professor Lamont is the co-author of Getting Respect: Responding to Stigma and Discrimination in the United States, Brazil, and Israel (Princeton University Press, 2016). She holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees in political science from Ottawa University. Professor Lamont earned a Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Paris. She joined the faculty at Harvard in 2003.
