Emory University Scholar Wins National Jewish Book Award

Miriam Udel, an associate professor of Yiddish language, literature, and culture in the department of German studies at Emory University in Atlanta, received the Dorot Foundation Award in Modern Jewish Thought and Experience from the Jewish Book Council.

Dr. Udel won the National Jewish Book Award for her first book Never Better! The Modern Jewish Picaresque (University of Michigan Press, 2016).  She will be honored at a ceremony in New York on March 7.

In discussing her book, Dr. Udel said “Jewish literature enters full-blown modernity when authors give up on the idea of fixing the Jews and decide to describe them in vivid terms without a program of repairs.”

Dr. Udel joined the Emory University faculty in 2007. She holds a Ph.D. in comparative literature from Harvard University.
