In Memoriam: Sandra Lee Schwartz Bartky, 1935-2016

Sandra Lee BartkySandra Lee Bartky, an influential feminist philosopher and a long-time faculty member at the University of Illinois at Chicago, died on October 17 at her home in Saugatuck, Michigan. She was 81 years old.

Professor Bartky was a native of Chicago. She earned bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees at the University of Illinois Urbana/Champaign. Dr. Bartky was hired to the faculty at the University of Illinois at Chicago as an instructor in 1963. She taught courses in philosophy and women’s and gender studies and was promoted to full professor in 1990. Professor Bartky retired in 2003 after 40 years on the faculty and was named professor emerita.

Dr. Bartky was the author of Femininity and Domination: Studies in the Phenomenology of Oppression (Routledge, 1990) and Sympathy and Solidarity and Other Essays (Rowman and Littlefield Publishers, 2002). She was a founding member of the Society for Women in Philosophy.
