In Memoriam: Dena F. Dincauze, 1934-2016

Dena DincauzeDena F. Dincauze, professor emerita of anthropology at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, died on August 14. She was 82 years old.

A native of Boston, Dr. Dincauze was a graduate of Barnard College in New York City, where she majored in anthropology with a minor in geology. She earned a Ph.D. in anthropology from Harvard University. Her doctoral dissertation reported on research on cremation cemeteries in eastern Massachusetts.

After working for five years on the staff of the Peabody Museum at Harvard, Dr. Dincauze taught at the University at Buffalo of the State University of New York System and then joined the faculty at the University of Massachusetts in 1973. She retired from teaching in 2001.

Professor Dincauze served as president of the Society of Professional Archaeologists and was the editor of American Antiquity, a journal of the Society of American Archaeology.
