Six Women Who Are Stepping Down From Their Higher Education Posts

masonSally Mason, who stepped down from her position as president of the University of Iowa a year ago, has now resigned her position as a tenured faculty member in university department of biology. When she retired last July, Dr. Mason was awarded a year free of teaching and service obligations as she prepared to return to the faculty.

Before becoming president of the University of Iowa in August 2007, Dr. Mason was provost at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. She received her bachelor’s degree in zoology from the University of Kentucky and holds a master’s degree from Purdue University and a Ph.D. in cellular, molecular, and developmental biology from the University of Arizona.

Andrews, dean of the Duke University School of Medicine and vice chancellor for academic affairs at Duke University, announced that she will step down from both positions at the conclusion of the 2016-17 academic year. Dr. Andrews is also the Nanaline H. Duke Professor of Pediatrics and Professor of Pharmacology & Cancer Biology.

Dr. Andrews holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Yale University. She is a graduate of Harvard Medical School and holds a Ph.D. in biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

higginsMarilyn Higgins, vice president of community engagement and economic development at Syracuse University in New York, is stepping down from her position. After leaving the university, Higgins will work as a consultant with the Near Westside Initiative in Syracuse.

Higgins joined the staff at Syracuse University in 2007. She is a graduate of the State University of New York at Oswego, where she majored in political science and government.

schmuckliClaudia Schmuckli, director of the Blaffer Art Museum at the University of Houston, is leaving her post to become curator-in-charge for contemporary art and programming at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. She has been director of the Blaffer Art Museum since 2009 and has been a member of the museum’s staff since 2004.

Blaffer is a former assistant curator at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. She holds a master’s degree in art history from the Ludwigs-Maximilians University in Munich.

Morrison-BeedyDianne Morrison-Beedy, dean of the College of Nursing at the University of South Florida, has resigned from her post. She will remain at the College of Nursing as a tenured professor.

Dr. Morrison-Beedy is a graduate of Niagara University in Lewiston, New York. She holds a master’s degree in women’s health from the University at Buffalo and a Ph.D. in nursing from the University of Rochester.

05302013- Faculty/Staff head shots day 2 Jodi Kelly Dean Matteo Ricci CollegeJodi Kelly, dean of Matteo Ricci College at Seattle University has resigned her post, a little more than a month after she was placed on administrative leave after student protesters called for her ouster. The dean had been accused of making racially insensitive remarks to a Black student.

Kelly has been dean since 20012 and first came to the university in 1984. The university has named her a professor emerita.
