In Memoriam: Hally Beth Walker Poindexter, 1927-2016

Hally PoindexterHally Beth Walker Poindexter, professor emerita of kinesiology at Rice University in Houston, Texas, died on July 19 in Houston. She was 88 years old.

A native of Houston, Dr. Poindexter held bachelor’s degrees from Rice University and the University of Houston. She earned a master’s degree at the University of Northern Colorado and an educational doctorate from Columbia University in New York City. She conducted postdoctoral research at the Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Texas School of Public Health.

Professor Poindexter served on the Rice University faculty from 1965 through 1998. For 20 years she was chair of the department of kinesiology. At Rice, she was a major force in advocating for equality of women in the university’s athletics programs.

The Hally Beth Poindexter Award is given each year to the most outstanding women’s volleyball player at Rice University.
