Grants or Gifts Relating to Women in Higher Education

MoneyHere is this week’s news of grants and gifts that may be of particular interest to women in higher education.

Donna Scott TilleyTexas Woman’s University, received a three-year, $750,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services for a program to raise awareness of and prevent sexual assault on colleges campuses. Eight other universities and five higher education organizations will participate in the grant project. The initiative will be led by Donna Scott Tilley, assistant provost for promotion of research and sponsored programs at Texas Woman’s University. Dr. Tilley hold bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Texas Tech University in Lubbock and a Ph.D. in nursing from the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio.

SuhRice University and the University of Texas MD Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, received a five-year, $1.8 million grant from the National Cancer Institute to conduct research in the use of viral gene therapy to combat ovarian cancer. Junghae Suh, an associate professor of bioengineering at Rice University will be one of the leaders of the research project. Dr. Suh has served on the Rice University faculty since 2007.

Ursuline College, the liberal arts educational institution for women in Pepper Pike, Ohio, received a two-year, $116,000 grant from the Cleveland Foundation to support the college’s First Year to Career program. The initiative places first-year students in professional settings and provides career-focused activities throughout the undergraduate experience.
