University of Chicago’s Martha Nussbaum to Receive the Kyoto Prize in Arts and Philosophy

Martha NussbaumMartha C. Nussbaum, the Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law at the University of Chicago, has been selected to receive the Kyoto Prize in Arts and Philosophy from the Inamori Foundation in Japan.

The prize committee stated that Professor Nussbaum is being honored because she “established a new theory of justice that ensures the inclusion of the weak and marginalized, who are deprived of opportunities to develop their capabilities in society, and has proposed ways to apply this theory in the real world.”

Professor Nussbaum will receive a gold medal and a cash prize of 50 million yen, equal to about $472,000, at ceremonies in Japan this coming November.

Professor Nussbaum is a graduate of New York University. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from Harvard University.
