Two Major Universities Name Women Provosts

wheatlyMichele G. Wheatly was appointed vice chancellor and provost at Syracuse University in New York. She will take office on May 16. From January 2010 to June 2014, Dr. Wheatly was provost at West Virginia University. From 2002 to 2010, she served as dean of college of science and mathematics at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. In 2015, Dr. Wheatly was a finalist for provost at Southern Methodist University and for president of the University of Toledo. Dr. Wheatly earned her bachelor’s degree and her doctoral degree from Birmingham University in the United Kingdom. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Calgary in Canada.

Diane ChaseDiane Chase will be the next provost at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She will also serve as executive vice president. The appointment is effective on May 1. Dr. Chase currently serves as vice provost for academic program quality at the University of Central Florida. A noted archaeologist with a focus on the Mayan civilization, Dr. Chase joined the faculty at the university in 1984 and has served in a variety of administrative roles for the past 15 years. Dr. Chase holds a bachelor’s degree in anthropology and a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Pennsylvania.
