University of Michigan Acquires the Archives of Filmmaker Nancy Savoca

Nancy-SavocaThe University of Michigan has acquired the archives of independent filmmaker Nancy Savoca for its Screen Arts Mavericks & Makers Collection. Savoca will be the first woman filmmaker who will be part of the archival collection which includes the work of Robert Altman, John Sayles, Orson Wells and others.

Savoca has been a filmmaker for 25 years. She won the grand jury prize at the inaugural Sundance Film Festival in 1989 for her film True Love. “I tend to create dynamic female characters,” Savoca said, “though it’s not something that I do on purpose. Everything you are influences your work, which is why it is so important that there is a diverse set of people making films and telling their stories.”

The archives include personal papers, notes, budgets, research documents, drafts of screenplays, audio and video interviews, press photographs, props, and other memorabilia.
