University of Alaska Program Aims to Boost Young Women’s Interest in Earth Sciences

University of Alaska FairbanksThe University of Alaska Fairbanks’ Girls on Ice program seeks to increase interest among high school girls in pursuing careers in geology and other earth sciences. Two teams of nine girls will spend 12 days exploring and learning about mountain and alpine landscapes with three instructors employed by the University of Alaska. One expedition will be held in Alaska and the other on Mount Baker, an ice-covered volcano in Washington State.

The young women who are accepted into the program participate tuition free. Grants supporting the program have been provided by the National Science Foundation, the Alaska Climate Science Center and the University of Alaska Fairbanks.
