The First Woman Board Chair of the Union of Concerned Scientists

kapuscinskiAnne Kapuscinski, the Sherman Fairchild Distinguished Professor of Sustainability Science and a professor of environmental studies at Dartmouth College in Hanover, New Hampshire, has assumed the chair of the of board of directors of the Union of Concerned Scientists. She is the first woman to serve in this post.

The Union of Concerned Scientists was founded in 1969 by scientists and students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The mission of the new organization called for scientific research to be directed away from military technologies and toward solving pressing environmental and social problems.

Dr. Kapuscinski’s research focuses on integrated food and energy systems and sustainable fishing. She has been a scientific adviser to the U.S. Food and Drug Commission and the World Health Organization. Professor Kapuscinski has been on the board of director of the Union of Concerned Scientists since 2002.

Before coming to Dartmouth in 2009, Professor Kapuscinski taught at the University of Minnesota for 25 years. She is a graduate of Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, where she majored in biology. Dr. Kapuscinski holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in fisheries science from Oregon State University.
