In Memoriam: Susan Hardwick, 1945-2015

susan-hardwickSusan Hardwick, a professor emerita of geography at the University of Oregon, died on November 11, after a brief illness. She was 70 years old.

Professor Hardwick joined the faculty at the University of Oregon in 2000 and retired from the full-time faculty in 2010. Earlier in her career, she taught at Texas State University in San Marcos, California State University, Chico and Cosumnes River College in Sacramento, California.

Dr. Hardwick was the author or co-author of several books including Russian Refuge: Religion, Migration, and Settlement on the North American Pacific Rim (University of Chicago Press, 1993) and Mythic Galveston: Re-Inventing America’s Third Coast (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2002).

Professor Hardwick was a graduate of Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania. She held a master’s degree from California State University, Chico and a Ph.D. in geography from the University of California, Davis.
