A “Troubling” Trend in Women Faculty Retention at Harvard

harvard-logoThe Dean’s Annual Report to the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard University shows that there are currently 729 ladder faculty in the Arts and Sciences at Harvard. This is down from 730 a year ago. The Faculty of Arts and Sciences conducted searches for just 56 tenure and tenure-track positions in fiscal year 2015, compared to 85 in fiscal year 2014.

According to the report, women made up 28 percent of the ladder faculty in the Arts and Sciences. This was up from 27 percent in 2014. However, the report also indicated that only 66 percent of women up for the tenure review remained at Harvard through the review process. For male members of the faculty, 78 percent stayed at Harvard to complete the tenure review process.

“In many cases, these faculty members found that the culture of the department was not conducive to their productivity and was a significant factor in their decision to leave,” according to the dean’s report. The dean called this trend “troubling.”
