Prestigious Honors and Awards for Seven Women Scholars

Yeonhwa Park, associate professor of food science at the University of Massachusetts, has been selected to receive the Timothy L. Monts Award from the American Oil Chemist Society. She is being honored for her work on bioactive lipids and their impact on health.

Dr. Park holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Seoul National University in Korea. She earned a Ph.D. in food science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Mary Staehle has been chosen to receive the 2015 Biomedical Engineering Teaching Excellence Award from the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE). Dr. Staehle, an assistant professor of chemical and biomedical engineering at Rowan University in Glassboro, New Jersey, will be honored at the ASEE’s annual convention in Seattle this June.

Dr. Staehle is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. She holds a Ph.D. in chemical engineering from the University of Delaware.

Beverly J. Purswell, professor emerita of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech, has been selected to receive the David E. Bartlett Award for Lifetime Achievement from the American College of Theriogenologists. Dr. Purswell will be honored at the group’s annual conference in San Antonio this coming August.

Dr. Purswell served on the faculty of Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine for 27 years. She continues to teach as a visiting scholar at St. Matthews University on Grand Cayman Island. Professor Purswell holds a doctor of veterinary medicine degree, a master’s degree, and a Ph.D. in immunology from the University of Georgia.

Jennifer West, the Fitzpatrick Family University Professor of Engineering at Duke University, received the 2015 Clemson Award for Basic Research from the Society for Biomaterials at Clemson University.

Professor West is a graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She holds a master’s degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Texas.

Deborah Waldrop, professor of social work at the University at Buffalo of the State University of New York System, received the Award of Excellence in Research from the Social Work Hospice and Palliative Care Network. Dr. Waldrop has been on the university’s faculty since 1999.

Professor Waldrop is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University. She holds a master of social work degree from Syracuse University in New York and a Ph.D. in human environmental science from Oklahoma State University.

The Department of Classics at Middlebury College in Vermont has been named in honor of Eve Adler. Professor Adler, who died in 2004, taught Latin, Greek, and Hebrew at the college for 25 years. A new lecture series and an endowed professorship will also be established in her honor.

Professor Adler was the author of Vergil’s Empire: Political Thought in the Aeneid (Rowman & Littlefield Publishers, 2003).

Janet L. Miller, professor of English education at Teachers College of Columbia University is the recipient of the Mary Anne Raywid Award from the Society of Professors of Education.

Professor Miller is a graduate of Grove City College in Pennsylvania. She holds a master’s degree from the University of Rochester in New York and a Ph.D. from Ohio State University.
